THE ESSENCE OF SPIRITUALITY

That night in the upper room, there was some frustration. The apostles were arguing over who was going to be the greatest in the kingdom that was coming. Is that not incredible? It reminds us of our attempts to control the church. When we try to determine who is “in” and who is “out” regarding Jesus’ church, we are really saying in our hearts, “I am greater than you.” We are arguing over the same things that the disciples were arguing over on that night. We rebut, refute, and resist—all for selfish reasons.

Jesus very calmly filled a pan with water, girded Himself with a towel, and began to wash the disciples’ feet. The essence of spirituality is dependence. However, we want to be independent. We say, “I want to be so strong that I do not need anybody else!” When our spirits are distraught and our faith is trembling, we do not know how to handle ourselves because we have taught ourselves a self-reliant religion. We have made independence our goal. Jesus said, “I want you to live as servants. You must look to Me for your strength to do what I am asking you to do.”

Jesus does not want independent elders, deacons, preachers, teachers, or members in His church. He has asked us to be dependent servants. God will handle His work through dependent men and women. When we give ourselves to God, we enter into His life, into His strength. We must do the work of God—working in God, with God, and through God.

Word Affirmation: “ God is my strength and power: and he maketh my way perfect." – 2 Samuel 22:33 (Don't just say it, mean it!)

“ We must do the work of God—working in God, with God, and through God. "
